5 Dead, 100 Missing in Uttarkashi Flash Flood; Rescue operation in full swing.

 Uttarkashi,
Uttarakhand

After a sudden downpour, a massive
flood swept through Uttarkashi district, claiming several lives and causing
extensive property damage.

The flash flood, accompanied by landslides,
left the state of Uttarakhand struggling with blocked roads, damaged
infrastructure, and large amounts of debris in the villages.

The affected
areas were cut off due to the collapse of the Limcha Gad bridge near Ganganani,
which blocked the Gangotri National Highway, and continuous heavy rainfall, along
with challenging terrain, made the rescue and relief operations a bit
difficult.

A Tourist
Haven Turned Disaster Zone

Dharali
village, a popular stop for pilgrims en route to the Gangotri dham, was the
most affected area. The flash flood swept through the Dharali village, turning
everything in its way into mud and debris.

It buried
many homes, hotels, and a small army camp under a large amount of mud and
debris.

Landslides
caused by the heavy rainfall blocked the roads, cutting off the village,
rendering the surviving locals and pilgrims stranded, waiting for rescue.

Massive
Rescue Operation Underway

The
Uttarakhand Government quickly launched a large-scale search and rescue
operation to evacuate and rescue as many people as possible.

Team, including
the State Disaster Response Force (SDRF), the Indian Army, and the Local Police,
is working around the clock to search and rescue the stranded residents and
pilgrims.

The rescue
teams had deployed heavy machinery, dog squads, drones, and ground penetrating
radar for the search and rescue mission to fasten up the operation amid the
challenging weather conditions, heavy rainfall, and difficult terrain.

Air
Support After Road Collapse

Efforts
faced a major setback when the Limcha Gad bridge near Ganganani collapsed,
blocking the Gangotri National Highway. With roadways blocked, the Indian Army
and the Uttarakhand Civil Aviation Authority turned to air support, deploying
IAS Chinook and Mi-17 helicopters to evacuate and rescue people and deliver
essential supplies.

Government
Response and Leadership

Uttarakhand Chief
Minister, Pushkar Singh Dhami, has been stationed at the district headquarters
for the past few days, holding high-level meetings with senior officers,
overseeing and monitoring all the relief measures.

In a
Statement, CM Dhami said,

“Reviewed
the relief and rescue operations going on in Dharali in Uttarkashi this
morning.”

He stated
that the Central Government is extending complete support to the rescue
operation, and the State Government stands by the victims.

The Chief
Minister also announced that he would donate a month’s salary towards the
Disaster relief.

Amid all
these situations, on 8th aug, DGP
Deepam Seth visited the site to oversee the functioning of the rescue
operation. After arriving at the Matli helipad and meeting the CM, he proceeded
to Harshil.

Casualty
Figures and Uncertainty

As of
Friday, after 4 days of rescue, a total of 840 people have been successfully
rescued. Official numbers remain conflicting- while some agencies said more
than 100 are missing, while some say 50, the Uttarakhand State Disaster
Management Authority has confirmed 16 missing, including nine Army personnel
and seven civilians.

The rescue
is underway to search and evacuate as many stranded victims as possible amid
the red alert.

Possible
Causes and Environmental Concerns

Experts have
hinted that it may be the result of a glacial lake breach or glacial collapse.
Some have suggested that it could be due to a landslide-dammed lake at a higher
altitude.

The
environmentalists have different say about it, according to them, it is due to
the geographical location of the village and the result of human intervention.
They cite the deforestation practice for the road widening as one reason of
many.

Many
opinions are being cited while the National Disaster Management Authority
(NDMA) has yet to confirm the cause of the flood in Uttarkashi.

In
conclusion, the Uttarkashi flood has struck as a reminder of the fragile
balance between nature and human activity. While rescue operations continue and
roads are gradually being restored, the focus remains on saving those still
stranded and providing relief to survivors. Experts warn that without stronger
environmental safeguards and sustainable development practices, such disasters
may become more frequent, posing a severe threat to communities in vulnerable
mountain areas.
